2023 Citizen Architect Class
Jaime Canaves, FAIA - AIA Miami -Canaves was appointed as the U.S. ambassador to the XIII Bienal de Arquitectura de Quito, Ecuador in 2006. He actively volunteers with Casa Valentina, an organization that helps former foster youth gain self-sufficiency providing more than 2,500 pro bono hours.
Juan Contin, AIA - AIA Palm Beach -Contin has served as the chair of the Lake Worth Beach Historic Preservation Board. He then chaired the Lake Worth Beach Planning and Zoning Board. He mentors high school students and is an adjunct professor.
Clarisse Gates, AIA - AIA Orlando - Gates serves on the City of Orlando Appearance Review Board. She is also the design committee chair of College Park Main Street and serves as co-chair of Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW).
Elizabeth Fleischhauer, AIA - AIA Florida Northwest -Fleischhauer was a member of the City of Pensacola Gateway Review Board. She has volunteered with IMPACT100 Pensacola Bay Area and Reclaim Our Vote helping non-profits with grants and encouraging community members to vote.
Adam Gayle, AIA - AIA Gainesville -Gayle has served as a mentor and speaker at the University of Florida and participates in Ask an Architect building the pipeline for future architects. He has volunteered with Rebuilding Together to build ADA complaint ramps and has served Habitat for Humanity.
Jerel McCants, AIA - AIA Tampa Bay - McCants has served as a mentor for the ACE Mentorship Program for 10 years. He is vice president of Friends of Tampa Union Station promoting awareness of the preservation of the Tampa train station. He has also served on the Hillsborough County Affordable Housing Committee.
Jonathan Moore, AIA - AIA Tampa Bay - Moore was president of the Rotary Club of Tampa, a board member of Habitat for Humanity Tampa and has volunteered teaching and as youth leader.
Dr. Ty Patak, AIA - AIA Florida Southwest -Patak served as chair of Tropic Isles Elementary School, School Advisory Committee and co-chair of Lee County Schools, Attendance Zone Advisory Committee. He was on the board of directors for Florida Design Out Crime Association, chair of Fort Myers Technical College, School Advisory Committee and vice president of Charlotte County Local Education Foundation (CLEF).
2022 Citizen Architect Class
- Craig Aquart, AIA - AIA Miami - Craig has served as Sunday school teacher and youth minister. He has provided his services to this homeowners’ association and introduced students to architecture through the Miami Dade County Public Schools STEM Advisory Board.
- Danilo Guiso, AIA - AIA Fort Lauderdale - Danilo has served as a member of the City of Coconut Creek Planning and Zoning Board. He has also helped students discover careers in architecture, construction and engineering as a Broward County Ace Mentor Group Board member.
- Peter Hauerstein, AIA - AIA Tampa Bay - Peter has served as the moderator for the HIllsborough County Community Sustainability Action Plan. He has also provided pro bono work as an advisor to the City of Tampa Replacement Home Project helping to house veterans.
- Rodney Lewis, AIA - AIA Tallahassee - Rodney has served a board member for Big Bend Habitat for Humanity helping to provide affordable housing. He has also served on the Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce board.
- Carlos Molnar, AIA - AIA Tampa Bay - Carlos served on the Joint Surfside Work Group making sure architects' voices were heard as recommendations for an existing building inspection program were developed for the Florida Legislature. He also taught at USF helping to shape the next generation of architects.
- Lourdes Solera, FAIA - AIA Miami - Lourdes has served on the City of Miami Historic and Environmental Preservation Board and the Miami Dade County Historic Preservation Board. She is also an active leader in the Boy Scouts of America and has served on the Board of Architecture and Interior Design.
2021 Citizen Architect Class
- Elizabeth Camargo, AIA. Camargo served on the Miami Beach Capital Improvement Projects Oversight Committee, the Miami Beach Design Review Board, the Bal Harbour Architectural Review Board, and in workshops on sea level rise headed by the city of Miami.
- William Gallo, AIA. Gallo has a long history of service to his community. He is chair and founding member of the Nova Southeastern University Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography Advisory Board; is a member of the city of Lighthouse Point Planning and Zoning Board; is a board member of Broward Workshop; is a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight; was nominated as corporate sponsor of the year for Nova Southeastern University; and is a contributing editor and columnist forLight Magazine.
- Brian Herbert, AIA. Herbert has more than a decade of service as member and chair of the city of Deerfield Beach Community Appearance Board. He is also involved with Nova Southeastern University and is a founding member of the Foundation of Academic and Community Excellence. Herbert is a member of the Broward County Green Building Council, a design review architect for the city of Parkland, serves as a troop leader in the Boy Scouts and is involved in his church.
- Maxim Nasab, AIA. Nasab participated most recently in a design charrette for the Creative Core in downtown Tallahassee. He is also a Leon County Council on Culture and Arts Cultural Facilities Matching Grant Program expert panelist, a member of NCARB's ARE 5.0 Item Development Subcommittee, a member of the board of directors for Goodwood Museum & Gardens, and a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity of the Big Bend.
- Rich Simmons, AIA. Simmons is the chair of the Barrio Latino Commission in Tampa and also participates in several Ybor City-focused nonprofits, including the Ybor Museum Society, the Ybor City Development Corp, and the Historic Ybor City Neighborhood Association. He is a youth sports coach, U.S. Army Reserve veteran and a California Safety Assessment Program volunteer.
