Hurricane Ian
Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida as a major hurricane near Cayo Costa, packing winds of 155 miles per hour. The storm spread wind, rain and damage across the state. directly impacting many members and firms. Find official hurricane information at FloridaDisaster.org and Ready.gov. For business owners, FloridaDisaster.biz provides preparedness, response and recovery information.
AIA Florida is in contact with members who sustained damage from Ian and evaluating local needs.AIA Florida Southwest President Stephanie McPherson, AIA, and other members of the component are developing a staging area to get much-needed supplies distributed in the Fort Myers area. If you would like to donate to this effort, please click here. The money collected will go directly to local components to assist in relief efforts.
AIA Florida has also been in communication with the Building Officials Association of Florida and local building officials. Should architects be called in for post-disaster assessments, we will reach out to those who are current with the Cal-OES Safety Assessment Program.
The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity and the State Emergency Response Team activated a Business Damage Assessment Survey that will allow the state to expedite recovery efforts by gathering data and assessing the needs of affected businesses.
The U.S. Small Business Administration provides low-interest disaster loans to homeowners, renters and businesses. The application filing deadlines in affected counties are Nov. 28, 2022, for physical damage and June 29, 2023, for economic damage.

- State Assistance Information Line (SAIL)
The State Assistance Information Line (SAIL) is a toll-free hotline activated at the time of an emergency to provide Floridians accurate and up-to-date information regarding an emergency or disaster situation. Call (800) 342-3557.
- Disaster Assistance Programs
Hurricane evacuees in need of disaster assistance locate help via the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster assistance search or search for a disaster recovery center.
In the event of a disaster, the governor of Florida has the option to activate the Emergency Bridge Loan Program to provide a source of expedient cash flow to Florida small businesses impacted by a disaster. If the program is activated, this website will contain applications and full instructions for completing and submitting a request as well as other disaster recovery resources.
SBA provides low-interest disaster loans to businesses of all sizes, private non-profit organizations, homeowners, and renters. SBA disaster loans can be used to repair or replace the following items damaged or destroyed in a declared disaster: real estate, personal property, machinery and equipment, and inventory and business assets. The Florida Division of Consumer Services offers free assistance to insurance consumers in the aftermath of hurricanes by via their consumer helpline (877) 693-5236. You can speak directly with individuals who can help you review your policies to understand your coverage, help you file claims for damage and help if you are having trouble communicating with your insurance company.
