Program Overview: In this course, we explore our inherent connection and attraction to nature, identified as biophilia. We explore the ways that our lives are dependently and beneficially intertwined with nature. We look at the trend towards Biophilic Design— integrating nature intoarchitecture to enliven biophilia’s restorative properties. Illusion, illusions of nature, and sky illusions will be examined in relationship to architectural design, and Biophilic Design, in particular. Finally, we’ll delve into the purpose, creation, and applications of sky-image ceilings.
Learning Objectives
Following this course you will be able to:
- Define biophilia – its bio-evolutionary origins and benefits to human life.
- Discuss the purpose and tenets of Biophilic Design.
- Summarize the use of illusion and illusions of nature in architecture.
- Explain the purpose, creation, and applications of sky-image ceilings.
