Significant Changes to the Wind Load Provisions in the 8th Edition (2023) Florida Building Code Update to ASCE 7-22 (Non-advanced)

This course will address the changes to the wind provisions in the 8th Edition (2023) Florida Building Code, Building (FBCB) and Florida Building Code, Residential (FBCR) due to the update to ASCE 7-22.

Advanced FBC: Understanding the Existing Building Code, 8th Edition (2023) - Non-advanced

May 1 at 2 p.m. Eastern/1 p.m. Central/ 12 p.m. Mountain/ 11 a.m. Pacific, 2 LU/HSW/FBC

The course provides a detailed overview of what and how an architect should understand design considerations when taking on a renovation, remodel, addition, relocation, or change of occupancy to any building or historic building. The course will instruct the attendee on the proper use of the prescriptive, performance or work area compliance methods and the required level of the alterations to the building.

8th Edition Fenestration Code Changes

May 13 at 12 p.m. Eastern, 1 LU/HSW

This course will analyze code changes related to fenestration between the Florida Building Codes 7th Edition (2020) and the Florida Building Codes 8th Edition (2023).­ A discussion and explanation will be offered as to what constitutes many of these code changes every new code cycle. The class is arranged so that comparable provisions in the two codes can be easily located. An explanation of each code change will be given, followed by a direct side-by-side comparison between the two code cycles.

Proactive Mitigation

May 14 at 12 p.m. Eastern, 1 LU/HSW, Free

This course will identify the benefits of ­proactive ­­mitigation­­ over reactive methods. Participants will learn about the advantages of ­­proactive­­­­ mitigation­­­ and the importance of opening protection. The course covers topics such as the manufacturing process and benefits of impact-rated glass, fenestration protection options within building codes, and dispels myths related to impact protection methods.

Safety Assessment Program Virtual Program presented by AIA New York

May 16 & 17, 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. EDT, 7 HSW (must attend both days to receive credits) OR

Sept. 19 & Sept. 20, 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. EDT, 7 HSW (must attend both days to receive credits)

The SAP is the training program developed by Cal OES that provides leadership, advocacy and training to architects, engineers and certified inspectors who are interested in developing their professional skills for use in times of crisis. This workshop will teach participants to conduct rapid damage assessments of structures affected by earthquakes, wind, and water. It also teaches the appropriate protocol for coordinating with emergency managers to limit professional liability.

This program is worth 7 HSW/LUs. To earn credit, you must be present for both days of the training. Please note if you have already taken this program during your current licensure period you will NOT be eligible to receive this credit again.

This course will take place via Zoom and a link will be emailed to you prior to the program. The link will be the same for both days.

AIA Florida, AIA Virgin Islands and AIA Puerto Rico members should select AIA member to get the member rate when registering and leave the AIANYS component section blank.­

Join us for a webinar on May 20, 2024 at 2 p.m.to discuss­ different ways architects can implement K-12 programs to introduce architecture to students locally. AIA Florida Northwest will share their Gingerbread Contest, AIA Miami will talk about their Black Architect in the Making (BAM) program and AIA Tallahassee and the Florida Foundation for Architecture will discuss Architecture in Education.

This seminar provides an overview of large opening glass wall systems, their structurally engineered components, and how they provide a perfect solution for large openings in coastal areas for commercial and residential applications. The course focuses on: benefits and applications, types of door systems, and door hardware.

Sea Level Rise

Florida's geography and lengthy coastline create a unique set of circumstances where sea level rise will have a variety of impacts across the state, both along our coast and tributaries and inland communities. Understanding the impacts of sea level rise across the state will help architects understand how to design safe, resilient buildings that will protect our citizens and infrastructure. Resilient building related to sea level rise will keep our community members safer at home, return to work as quickly as possible and lessen the economic burden on our state.­
